WHEN TO TEST FOR EMISSIONS:
For some zip codes, Washington State law requires
vehicle emission checks
every other year to meet Federal health standards.
In addition, an emission check may be required when you buy a used vehicle.
Motor vehicles listed in the table below must be tested if the registered owner lives in an
emission check area zip code
.
It is illegal to register your motor vehicle outside the zip code of your primary residential address.
These model year vehicles require tests during years 2008 through 2011:
YEAR
2008
2009
2010
2011
|
VEHICLES REQUIRING A TEST
1984-1996 even model years + 1997 - 2003 odd model years
1985-1997 odd model years + 1998 - 2004 even model years
1986-1998 even model years + 1999 - 2005 odd model years
1987-1999 odd model years + 2000 - 2006 even model years
|
Vehicles newer than five years and older than 25 years do not need to be tested.
An emission check costs $15.00 and can be paid by cash, check or credit card.
We recommend that the buyer of a used vehicle make sure that the vehicle
has had a recent passing emission check before purchasing it.
However, only one passing emission check is required within the last 12
months to renew a vehicle license or to transfer vehicle ownership.
Dealer sales are exempt from testing. The Department of Licensing cannot accept emission checks from other states.
