For some zip codes, Washington State law requires vehicle emission tests to meet Federal air quality standards. See emission test area zip code. It is illegal to register your motor vehicle outside the zip code of your primary residential address.
When to Test for Emissions:.
Renewals: Motor vehicles listed in the table below must be tested.
These model year vehicles require tests during years 2011 through 2014:
|VEHICLES REQUIRING A TEST|
1987-1995 odd model years + 1996-2006 even model years
1988-1994 even model years + 1997-2007 odd model years
1989-1995 odd model years + 1996-2008 even model years
1990-1994 even model years + 1997-2009 odd model years
Transfer of Ownership: An emission test, passed within the last 12 months, is required to transfer vehicle ownership. Search for test record. Dealer sales are exempt from testing. The Department of Licensing cannot accept emission tests from other states.
Contact us for help in transferring ownership of inoperable vehicles.
Exceptions: Vehicles newer than five years and older than 25 years need not be tested.
You may apply for a temporary exemption if your vehicle is out of the emission testing area for an extended period of time. See out-of-area form.
An emission test costs $15.00 and can be paid by cash, check or credit card.
